New dates and a new theme for the Lap Quilter’s group

Here are some notes about what I have planned for Sew Fly, Scrappy Quilter’s Piece Makers Lap Quilting sessions for September, October, and November 2020.  Please note I am changing some of the dates the groups attend classes. Since we are going into the holiday period of the year, I thought it would make your life easier. Since I have limited “in person enrollment” during the covid 19 shut down I will be combining the Scrappy and Sew Fly quilters to one monthly lesson. The September class will be at 2pm on Thursday September 24th . We will be sewing the crazy quilt block. If you reserved a monogram, I have will it waiting for you on Thursday. Make sure you have scraps to work on your crazy quilt block. Some scraps need to be at least 6″ x 12 1/2″. If you need a machine, please let me know. I have 2 available. If you decide you would like additional monograms I do sell the letters for PES, SEW and XXX formats.

The additional class for Scrappy Quilter’s and Sew Fly Quilter’s will be on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 2pm and will continue into the 2021 season.

The dates for the additional 2020 Scrappy and Sew Fly Quilters are October 8th, November 12th and December 10th at 2pm. We will cover House on the Hill, Card Tricks plus binding and finishing the quilt. The year sure when fast and it is amazing how much we covered in the world of quilting. I hope everyone will continue to stay with the group and continue to expand ideas.

————————————————————————————————————————

My idea for a new project class for the Piece makers is to design a quilt around a theme called “Give Thanks”.  Please read about the “Give Thanks “ quilt theme below.

Piece maker’s will now meet on the 1st Thursday of the month. You can come on October 1st to discuss how to start your “Give Thanks” class. Bring a few 12 ½” pieces of muslin or white fabric for practice of  “Free Motion Applique”. Bring some Totally Stable for the backing to help sew the applique.  We can discuss ideas for your quilt and you can get ideas for your free motion applique block.

On a first come first serve basis you can start the “Give Thanks” quilt. I will introduce the Sew Fly and Scrappy quilt groups in January 2021 with their own “Give Thanks” quilt. Anyone who wants to start a “Give Thanks” quilt now can join the Piece makers Thursday group as long as space is available.  If we have enrollment increases, I will add back an extra Thursday class. Right now, we have 4 members who attend. I will set the Scrappy and Sew Fly quilters to come for the completion of their 2020 lap quilt on the 2 Thursday of each month. Techniques will be combined in January 2021 and all groups will be doing the same quilt lesson.

I want to apply some “Give Thanks” ideas to lap quilt making. Most of my ideas are notes now. I hope to put them into action soon. I need hear some input from my lap quilters on the “Give Thanks” theme for a new quilt.  “All We Need is Love” and “Give Thanks” are universal. The quilt can grow from whatever is in your heart and how you want to share it. We will start with several size finished blocks and each block with be sized to fit the finished quilt later. Think of finished blocks from 6 ½” to 12” to 24” in size. We will combine blocks to work in the 24” size of each block ( add seam allowances). Sizes of quilts can start at 24” and grow to 48” and then 72” and up to 96”. You decide!

Some of the techniques include ink jet fabric printing

I will provide some verses and prayers to use in blocks if you want to add them

Framing and piecing blocks

Hand embroidery with embroidery floss (On a solid muslin type fabric)

Coloring book blocks

Free motion applique

Permanent marker free motion

Watercolor piecing We will need to cut prefect 2″ squares to share in this part of the quilt.

I will recommend fabrics and supplies you will need to purchase on line and will send links to get “verse” fabric or panels. You will need to buy the supplies as I show them because I can not guarantee they will remain available.

If you have an embroidery machine you can use some of my embroidery designs, I will offer them for sale at a very reasonable price in many formats

This quilt would make an excellent fund raiser as I view it as a work of art when you are done. Each quilt will be different because you will place you own fabrics into the project. You can work on several blocks at a time and coordinate them later to make several quilt tops.

The ideas I present now are just research and inspiration. You will need to purchase fabrics. I suggest you purchase about 3 yards of white or off white to use in verses, embroidery and coloring blocks. Use some scraps. Look at your leftovers and pick a few pastels to combine. My quilt will probably use pinks, greens, off whites, light blues and roses. Later you can pick a border and backing fabric. Use the lap quilt book for quilt size, thread and trims. We will probably pick some 12 1/2″ piecing blocks from the lap quilt book to use but I do not think we will do any mitered borders. Pick a few prints with multiple colors to trade when we look at watercolor blocks. I just purchased a whole set of permanent Sharpie markers to color with.

I think the project will take at least 6 to 8 months to complete but could be longer, depending on how creative we decide to be.
